Upcycle cardboard boxes into stylish storage baskets with the help of a glue gun.

Cardboard box makeover

Don’t throw those empty cardboard boxes away! Instead transform them into chic and functional storage containers that will be useful all over your home. With a little creativity, a hot glue gun and some natural fibre rope, you can give a humble cardboard box a new lease on life. Here’s how:

What you’ll need:

  • A cardboard box (any box with some depth will do)
  • Hot glue gun and glue sticks
  • Twine
  • Scissors
  • Silicone gloves (to avoid burns)

Step 1. Prepare the box

If the box has flaps or a lid, use scissors to cut them off. These flaps can be used as scrap cardboard to protect the workspace while you’re using your glue gun.

Step 2. Set up the workspace

Turn the box on its side. This makes it easier to work in a straight line along the bottom edge.

Step 3. Attach the twine

You’re going to wrap twine around the box. You need to work fast with a glue gun or the glue will harden before you’re ready. Put the silicone gloves on and then start by applying a small amount of hot glue to one of the bottom corners of the box. Quickly press one end of the twine into the glue to create an anchor point.

Once the anchor point is dry, run a line of hot glue where the twine will sit. In this case, it’s along the bottom edge of the box. Quickly place the twine straight and taut into the line of hot glue. Work in small sections to give you time to position the twine properly before the glue dries.

Step 4. Wrap the box

Continue to apply hot glue and press the twine into it, wrapping the twine around the box. Keep the lines tight and flush against each other to avoid gaps and achieve a uniform look.

Rotate the box as you work, wrapping the twine around the box until you reach the top edge.

Step 5. Finish up

When you reach the last corner at the top edge, cut off any excess twine after the final bit is stuck into place.

Step 6. Add a protective layer

To protect the new basket from moisture (especially if you’ll use it in a bathroom), spray it with two coats of Rust-Oleum clear matt spray paint.

And just like that, a dull cardboard box has been transformed into a stylish and functional storage basket! This easy DIY project not only upcycles cardboard boxes but also adds a touch of rustic charm to any room. Happy crafting!
