We all love a beautiful green lawn, but the time between bare earth and lush lawn can feel like forever if you do it the old-fashioned way with seeds or runners. That’s why instant lawns are such a win, getting you to an established lawn, well, instantly!

But as with everything in life, it’s best to start with the right preparation and products to get the very best result.

Start with the groundwork

A great lawn begins below the surface. Before laying any instant lawn, it’s important to prepare the area properly to ensure even growth and long-term success.

Start by levelling the space. If your garden has dips or uneven areas, build these up using a quality growing medium like Garden Master potting soil, which is now available in bulk bags of 1m3. This helps create a smooth, even base for your lawn to sit on.

Once levelled, enrich the soil by adding Garden Master compost, which is also available in bulk bags as well as the easier to handle smaller bags. A good quality compost improves soil structure, boosts nutrient content and creates the right environment for strong root development. Compost can be used both in new garden beds and lawn areas, making it a versatile addition to your prep process.

For even better results, at this stage also apply a root-building product such as Atlantic Bio Rock Root Builder. This helps stimulate root growth and supports the lawn as it establishes itself in its new environment.

Laying the instant lawn

With your base prepared, it’s time to lay the instant lawn blocks, which are conveniently available from your nearest Builders. Instant lawn comes in neat, regular squares, allowing you to position sections neatly across the prepared area.

Lay the blocks tightly together, ensuring there are minimal gaps between them. This helps the lawn knit together more quickly and creates a seamless finish.

After installation, allow the lawn to settle naturally. Small gaps may appear as the blocks adjust, which is completely normal. These can be filled later with a lawn dressing to create a smooth, continuous surface.

Strengthen and feed your lawn

Once the lawn has had time to settle, typically after a few weeks, it’s important to support growth.

Apply a lawn dressing such as those from Garden Master  to fill any remaining gaps and improve the overall finish. This also helps retain moisture and encourages root development.

After about three weeks, fertilise the lawn using a product like Bio Ganic for Lawns or Talborne Vita Grow 2:3:2. This provides essential nutrients that promote healthy, green growth and help the lawn establish more quickly.

Regular feeding ensures your lawn remains thick, vibrant, more water-wise and resilient over time.

Watering made simple

Watering is key to a healthy green lawn, especially in the early stages. For the first few weeks after installation, water your lawn daily for around 10 minutes. This keeps the soil consistently moist and supports root establishment. As the lawn begins to take hold, you can gradually reduce the frequency of watering.
Using the right tools makes this process easier and Garden Master hoses and sprinklers will help to ensure your lawn receives even watering across the entire area. That’s it, from the dream of a green lawn to reality in a few quick and easy steps.

Instant lawn products, soil enhancers, fertilisers and watering solutions are all available in-store and online.
