How to make a kitchen trolley

Repurpose an old ladder and a few materials around your home to create this useful kitchen trolley.

Materials you will need:

Ruler or measuring tape
Sponge roller and tray
Drill with 3 mm bit
Screwdriver
Spirit level
Pencil
Jigsaw
Old wooden ladder
Leftover paint (optional)
3 x laminated pine shelves (P1) 300 x 600 mm
1 x laminated shelf (P2) 400 x 900 mm
Screws 4 x 16 mm
Screws 4,5 x 45 mm
Metal washers 5 x 18 x 1,5 mm
Coat hook
4 x corner brace 50 x 50 mm
4 x chair angles 125 x 22 mm
2 x soft wheel swivel plate casters 50 mm
2 x soft wheel swivel plate castors 50 mm with brakes

Step 1

Prime the planks and paint with leftover paint. This step is optional – you can save money by leaving the planks natural.

Step 2

Using two 45 mm screws, attach one of the P1 shelves to the middle of the bottom step of the ladder.

Step 3

Rest the shelf on the cross bar on the opposite side of the ladder. Use the spirit level to see if the shelf is level. If not, use metal washers between the cross bar and the shelf to level it. Attach the shelf with two 45 mm screws through the washers.

Step 4

Attach another P1 shelf with two 45 mm screws to the next step up. Use the spirit level to make sure the shelves are directly above each other. Use 2 corner braces and 16 mm screws to attach the shelf to the opposite side of the ladder, placing the spirit level on the shelf to make sure it’s straight.

Step 5

Using the spirit level, make a mark on all the legs about 5 cm above the top step of the ladder. Lay the ladder on its side. Use the jigsaw to cut off the legs above the top step at the marks you’ve made.

Step 6

Place the last P1 shelf on the top step; use the spirit level to make sure it’s level with the shelves at the bottom. Attach it to the step with two 45 mm screws. Use the remaining two corner braces to attach the shelf to the opposite side of the ladder, using the spirit level to make sure it’s straight.

Step 7

Place the P2 shelf on the floor between the legs. Attach the shelf to the legs of the ladder with 4 chair angles.

Step 8

Turn the ladder upside down and attach the casters to the corners of the bottom shelf. Be sure to place the casters with brakes at the same end of the shelf.
