Make a convenient wall spice rack or, if you’re short of wall space, spice tins to stick on your fridge.

Materials you will need:

  • Measuring tape
  • Pencil
  • Combination square
  • Jigsaw
  • G-clamps
  • Router with ½ inch bit
  • Screwdriver
  • Embossed label maker with black tape
  • Old cooldrink crate (about 14,5 cm deep
  • 2 pine planks 12 x 144 x 1 800 mm
  • 3 x 25 mm chipboard screws (pack of 35)
  • 2 x slotted hangers and screws (pack of 4)

Step 1

Measure the inside width and length of your crate.

Step 2

On the pine planks measure 3 x the length of the inside of the crate and 5 x the width of the crate. Use the combination square to draw a line at a right angle on your marks.

Step 3

Clamp the planks to your work surface and use the jigsaw to cut the planks. You should have 3 long pieces and 5 short pieces.

Step 4

Evenly space the longer planks in the crate and measure the spaces in between. Ours worked out to 6 cm each. Do the same with the shorter planks. Again ours worked out to 6 cm.

Step 5

Mark the measurements from step 4 on the planks. Now mark the width of a plank at each measurement. When you’ve drawn all the double lines, make a mark just more than halfway along the inside of each double row of lines; this is how far you’ll use the router.

Step 6

Secure the planks on your work surface with G-clamps and use the router with the ½ inch bit to cut slits on all the planks inside the double lines you marked in step 5.

Step 7

When you’ve cut all the planks, assemble them to form pigeonholes by sliding them over one another.

Step 8

Insert the pigeonhole structure into the crate and secure in place with screws from the back of the crate.

Step 9

Attach slotted hanger plates to the back of the crate.

Step 10

Use the embossed label maker to make labels for the pigeonholes.

Step 11

Hang the crate on the wall and put bottled herbs and spices inside.
