We show you how to make a trendy bed base that looks just like an oversized pallet

Materials you will need:

  • one 1 800mm length planed pine (69 x 94mm) cut into nine blocks of 150mm each (supports)
  • six 2 400mm lengths planed pine (22 x 94mm) cut into six lengths of 1 870mm each (long base pieces)
  • fifteen 1 800mm lengths planed pine (22 x 94mm) each cut shorter to 1 370mm (slats)
  • two packets of 8mm x 40mm chipboard screws
  • five castors with plates (get two castors with brakes)
  • 120-grit sandpaper
  • cordless drill and 3mm drill bit
  • pencil
  • tape measure
  • multi-square
  • wood clamps

Step 1

Screw three of the 69 x 94 x 150mm blocks between two of the 22 x 94 x 1 870mm planks – one block at each end and one in the middle. Repeat this method to make the other two base structures.

Step 2

Screw three of the 22 x 94 x 1 370mm slats at a right angle to the three base structures (at each of the block struts) to form the bottom of the bed base.

Step 3

Turn the base over and space the remaining twelve 22 x 94 x 1 370mm slats at a right angle across the top of the bed base.

Step 4

Turn the base over again and screw a castor into each corner, as well as one in the middle of the bed for extra support. Place the two castors with brakes at the foot of the bed; this makes them easier to reach if you want to move the bed. Paint or varnish the wood in the colour of your choice; we decided to keep it natural.

Project Notes

  • Ask your timber merchant to cut the wood to size.
  • Sand the planks beforehand.
  • Remember to drill pilot holes.
  • Adjust the length of the slats for a queen- or king-size bed.
  • Use wood clamps if you’re anovice or working alone.
