We show you how to make a trendy bed base that looks just like an oversized pallet
- one 1 800mm length planed pine (69 x 94mm) cut into nine blocks of 150mm each (supports)
- six 2 400mm lengths planed pine (22 x 94mm) cut into six lengths of 1 870mm each (long base pieces)
- fifteen 1 800mm lengths planed pine (22 x 94mm) each cut shorter to 1 370mm (slats)
- two packets of 8mm x 40mm chipboard screws
- five castors with plates (get two castors with brakes)
- 120-grit sandpaper
- cordless drill and 3mm drill bit
- pencil
- tape measure
- multi-square
- wood clamps
Step 1
Screw three of the 69 x 94 x 150mm blocks between two of the 22 x 94 x 1 870mm planks – one block at each end and one in the middle. Repeat this method to make the other two base structures.
Step 2
Screw three of the 22 x 94 x 1 370mm slats at a right angle to the three base structures (at each of the block struts) to form the bottom of the bed base.
Step 3
Turn the base over and space the remaining twelve 22 x 94 x 1 370mm slats at a right angle across the top of the bed base.
Step 4
Turn the base over again and screw a castor into each corner, as well as one in the middle of the bed for extra support. Place the two castors with brakes at the foot of the bed; this makes them easier to reach if you want to move the bed. Paint or varnish the wood in the colour of your choice; we decided to keep it natural.
Project Notes
- Ask your timber merchant to cut the wood to size.
- Sand the planks beforehand.
- Remember to drill pilot holes.
- Adjust the length of the slats for a queen- or king-size bed.
- Use wood clamps if you’re anovice or working alone.
