While cement blocks on a patio are extremely practical, they can also be pretty boring. Make a statement and paint them in bright colours – ready for a fiesta!
- hydrochloric acid
- Dulux Exterior Matt PVA in the colours of your choice
- exterior sealant (optional)
- steel brush
- protective gloves
- sponge roller
- paint tray
- mixing bowl
- Drill and a small drill bit for pilot holes.
Step 1
Acid etch the surface with a solution of hydrochloric acid to remove laitance, or treat uncured cement as follows: dilute one part hydrochloric acid with two parts water, and scrub with a steel brush; more than one application may be necessary to achieve a paintable surface. Don’t forget to wear protective gloves.
Step 2
Paint the blocks with a sponge roller and PVA in the colours of your choice. Apply two coats, allowing sufficient drying time in-between.
Top Tip
Don’t paint all the blocks; rather create a checkerboard effect by painting alternate pavers in black and white, or play with a variety of colours to add a fun element to a kiddies’ play area.
