You’ll need an afternoon and four cans of paint to add flair to an old tray table and turn it into an eye-catching piece.
- An old tray or butlers tray and stand
- 180-grit sandpaper
- Rust-Oleum spray Painter’s Touch paint in Candy Pink Gloss, Winter Gray Gloss, Ivory Silk Satin and Brilliant Metal Finish
- Painter’s tape
- Cutting knife
Step 1
Sand the tray and stand lightly with fine (180-grit) sandpaper to get rid of unevenness and to add some grip to the surface.
Step 2
Decide on a pattern and colour combination. We decided on a geometric triangle combination with four colour shades. Start with the lightest colour, white, and spray the whole tray with the white spray paint and leave to dry.
Step 3
Scale the pattern on the tray and mark the triangles where the other colours will be placed.
Step 4
Mask the triangles for the pink, and cover the rest of the tray with newsprint.
Step 5
Spray the pink triangles and leave to dry. Continue with the rest of the colours (grey and metallic) until the desired colour scheme and pattern is achieved.

Step 6
Print a letter in the desired font on your household printer.Cut the letter outline with a cutting knife, and remove the printed area to create a template.
Step 7
Place the paper template showing the cut-out letter on the tray, with the correct side of the paper facing you, and spray with the contrasting spray paint.
